Teen drivers and teen passengers a bad mix

Teenagers in Louisiana and the rest of the United States are more likely to find themselves in a car accident if they drive teenage passengers, according to a study recently released by a national motorists' group. And, more hauntingly, the teenage driver's risk of perishing in that accident increases when other teenagers ride along, while that risk drops when adults join them.

The study on teen driving is the most comprehensive completed in more than a decade and the first believed to reflect state driving laws affecting teens that began to take effect more than 15 years ago.

Man sentenced in Louisiana for fatal accident

A fatal car accident is a tragedy that leaves behind grieving family members, and it sometimes can tear friends and families apart. In the case of a 32-year-old man, who pleaded guilty to killing his best friend in a car accident in Slidell, Louisiana, however, the mother of the victim asked the judge to impose the most lenient sentence possible.

The prosecutor did as the family requested, imposing the minimum sentence. The driver, who pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide and negligent injuring charges, admitted he had used drugs shortly before he sent his car hurling into a pine tree. He was sentenced to five years in prison on the vehicular homicide charge; three will be served without the possibility of parole and the other two were suspended in exchange for five years of probation. He also received a six-month sentence for negligent injury that will be served concurrently with the other sentence.

Louisiana firm sued in drowning death of brothers

A Louisiana corporation faces a wrongful death suit filed by the parents of two young brothers who drowned in a swimming pool at an apartment complex.

The boys, ages 7 and 5, reached the pool by climbing through a hole in the fence around the pool, a family attorney said. Just before they drowned, the boys had been playing at an adjacent playground. The family spokesman said the boys spotted a gap in the fence that could have been as large as a foot wide and climbed through it to access the pool.

Louisiana woman negligent in fatal accident

A jury in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, has found a 63-year-old woman criminally negligent for causing a car accident two years ago that left three people dead.

The woman, a resident of Kenner, Louisiana, now faces a sentence that will range from probation to five years in prison.

Questions raised about fatal accident

Two years after a car accident that left an elderly woman dead, questions have been raised about the cause of the accident. Was the 84-year-old woman's husband to blame, as police in this southeastern state said, or did a speeding sheriff's deputy cause the accident, which fellow deputies then covered up? The victims' family could be contemplating a lawsuit after a newspaper uncovered some startling facts.

Louisiana woman's accident suit can go forward

A Louisiana woman can proceed with her lawsuit against the state agency that employs her, now that an appellate court has ruled she has a viable case pertaining to a car accident in the parking lot of her work.

In July 2009, the woman was backing out of her parking space at the Huey P. Long Medical Center in Pineville, Louisiana. She had fully removed her car from the space and had come to a complete stop when a van, owned by the medical center and driven by an on-duty staff member, hit the woman's car. She filed a petition for damages against the van driver and the Board of Supervisors of Louisiana State University, which oversees the medical center.

Hospital accused of wrongful death in mammogram case

A hospital system in a southeastern state faces a wrongful death lawsuit brought by the family of a woman who died after she was given incorrect mammogram results, leading her not to seek timely treatment for breast cancer.

The woman went to the hospital between 2008 and 2009 for the test, and she received word that it came back normal contained no signs of cancer. On April 1, 2010, the hospital said it learned that the employee had falsified mammogram results, including the woman's test. She returned for another mammogram that showed breast cancer that had spread.

Accident with police car, pedestrians under investigation

Officials of the New Orleans Police Department said they are investigating claims of a couple who said they were the victims of a pedestrian and car accident involving a department patrol car.

The man and woman, both residents of the city and in their early 30s, said they were walking in the central business district at night. The police cruiser, their representative said, went through a red light at St. Charles Avenue and St. Joseph Street, then struck a taxi before it skidded into the couple and eventually into a fence. He said the cruiser's lights and sirens were not on. The couple went to the hospital for unspecified injuries. They were released within the next day.

Louisiana woman facing jail time in fatal accident

The family of a young woman killed in a car accident in 2009 agreed to a plea deal, wanting to avoid a trial and to see the driver behind bars as soon as possible.

The driver, 25, pleaded no contest to vehicular homicide and vehicular injuring in the first degree. She is expected to receive a five-year jail sentence, with two years suspended, at her June 26 sentencing. She also will get credit for time served.

Motorcycle and Car Fatal Accident

The Honda "crotch rocket rider" motorcycle was traveling at approximately 85 mph.

The VW driver was talking on a cell phone when she pulled out from a side street, apparently not seeing the motorcycle. The rider's reaction time was not sufficient enough to avoid this accident.

The car had two passengers and the bike rider was found INSIDE the car with them.
The Volkswagen actually flipped over from the force ...of impact and landed 20 feet from where the collision took place.

All three involved (two in the car and the bike rider) were killed instantly.
